How to Score French Tarot

The official target, base-score formula, bonuses and how scores are shared.

1. The target depends on oudlers

The complete deck is worth 91 points. The taker’s target is determined by the number of oudlers in their tricks:

Oudlers capturedTarget
056 points
151 points
241 points
336 points

2. Base score

First calculate the difference between the taker’s points and the target. The contract multiplier is then applied to 25 plus the absolute difference:

Base score = (25 + |points made − target|) × contract multiplier

The multipliers are Take/Petite ×1, Guard ×2, Guard Without the Dog ×4 and Guard Against the Dog ×6. If the taker reaches the target, this score is positive for the taker’s side. If not, it is negative.

3. Bonuses

  • Petit at the End: when the Petit is played in the final trick, the bonus is 10 × contract multiplier for the side that wins that trick.
  • Handful: a shown handful is worth 20 points (single), 30 (double) or 40 (triple). The bonus goes to the side that wins the hand, not necessarily the player who announced it.
  • Slam: taking every trick earns +400 when announced and made, +200 when made without an announcement, and −200 when announced but missed.

4. Sharing the result

PlayersScore allocation
3The taker scores or loses 2 × the unit; each defender takes the opposite unit.
4The taker scores or loses 3 × the unit; each defender takes the opposite unit.
5, with called partnerThe taker gets 2 parts, partner 1 part, and each of the three defenders pays or receives 1 part.
5, “King in hand”The taker plays alone and gets 4 parts; each defender gets or pays 1 part.

Worked example

At four players, the contract is Guard (×2). The taker has two oudlers, so the target is 41, and makes 48 points. The difference is +7. Base score = (25 + 7) × 2 = 64. With no bonuses, the taker scores +192 and each defender −64; the table total is zero.
